Imported Plants: First Steps
Give your new plant the best chance to thrive after its long journey.
🧳 1. Unbox Gently & Inspect
- Carefully remove the plant from its packaging.
- Check for root rot, mold, or pests.
- Don’t panic if the plant looks stressed —yellowing or wilted leaves are normal after transit.
🧼 2. Clean & Trim
- Gently remove any dead or damaged leaves using sterilized scissors.
- Inspect the roots and carefully trim away any mushy or dead roots.
- Rinse the foliage lightly with lukewarm water to remove shipping dust or potential pests.
- You can also wipe the leaves with a damp cloth for a gentle clean.
- Treat the plant with an insecticidal soap of your choice to prevent or eliminate pests.
- For an added boost, place the plant's roots in water with a Superthrive solution (kelp amino acids, not the fertilizer) and let it soak overnight to support root recovery.
🪴 3. Do NOT Pot Immediately
- Imported plants need time to adjust. Potting too soon adds shock.
- You can leave the plant in its original medium (sphagnum moss), put in water or perlite for at least 7–14 days.
☀️ 4. Light, Humidity & Watering
- Avoid placing your plant in bright light right away. After days in darkness, sudden exposure — even indirect sunlight — can shock the plant further.
- Start it in a low-light or shaded area, then slowly move it closer to brighter indirect light over several days to a week.
- Keep humidity high — ideally 70–90% — to help reduce stress. - Use a humidity dome, or a covered plastic bin with airflow.
- Water sparingly — only when the medium is slightly dry. Avoid overwatering, especially if roots are weak or trimmed.
🛑 5. Avoid Fertilizer for 2–3 Weeks
- Your plant is in recovery mode. Wait until new growth appears before feeding.
- When ready, start with a diluted, gentle fertilizer (¼ strength).
🕓 6. Be Patient — Acclimation Takes Time
- It can take 2–6 weeks for your plant to stabilize.
- Drooping is common and usually temporary, some leaf loss is also possible.
- Celebrate signs of new growth — they mean the plant is adjusting well!
✅ Quick Tips:
- Keep it in a low-stress, stable environment.
- Avoid drafts, temperature swings, and direct sun.
- Talk to your plant (seriously, it helps you notice changes!)
